Looking out of the apartment's window after Hurricane Irene had passed, I noticed a group of people with a lot of tripods and some photography equipment. That piqued my interest and I thought I'd go and investigate (aka, poke my nose in!) - I'm glad I did! I met the renowned photographer Bryan Peterson (ppsop.com) who was teaching photography techniques.

This is the first in an on going series of Videos that I will post showing how I light and create images. My goal is to not just show the behind the scenes of my work but to provide easy to follow instructions on how to create the lighting you see. No guessing or trying to figure it out. It is clear. This is s simple 3 light Portrait lesson that shows the basics of a 3 light set up to photograph a person. Part 2 will show how I use special effects and a couple of more lights to push the shot a little farther. This piece was edited by Adam Consolo.

In this video I go through a few photos that can give you ideas on how to improve your lighting. Here are a few tips to help even more. Study photographs! There is no replacement for studying other photographer's work. Try to break down how photographs were lit, position of lights & shadow Change the pose or angle for a portrait to get a better result Watch the lighting on TV shows or movies. They are great at what they do (most of the time...) so pay attention! Last one: keep working at it and practicing! Most great photographs don't fall in your lap, you need to CREATE THEM!

"SUTRA", which has ancient Sanskrit Indo-Aryan origins means "a thread or line that holds elements together." This powerful word well defines the essence of Yatin's series, photographed in his hometown of Ahmedabad, India. After a while they looked at my videos and they asked if I wanted to do a guest post for them.
